The long running campaign to save one of Yorkshire's most architecturally significant bandstands has taken another step in the right direction.
As has been reported on 4BR over the last few years, the Grade 2 listed bandstand was in danger of being demolished. Originally constructed in 1914, its future had been debated without resolution, with hopes of it becoming part of a 'Stronger Towns Fund' bid failing to fully materialise.
However, in December 2024 it was announced that after obtaining third party permissions, Todmorden Town Council had gained ownership in order to proceed with further development.
Ambitious plans
It has now been confirmed that following the appointment of contractors it will be part of an ambitious £17.5m Centre Vale Park improvement and investment programme in the town, to boost the local economy and bring better opportunities for health, wellbeing, leisure and enjoyment to residents and businesses.
The Bandstand sits at the top of Todmorden's principal green space, Centre Vale Park, and once renovated its future will be secured for community use including performances, festivals and events throughout the year.
Engaging
As part of the project, Todmorden Town Council is working with the local community-led Bandstand Group who will have a role in engaging with local performing organisations to use the restored Bandstand, as part of a town wide ambition to coordinate events and performances.
We look forward to working with the Town Council to bring this wonderful building back into useTodmorden Bandstand Group
Thanks
Speaking about the welcome news, James Duffy, a member of Todmorden Bandstand Group said: "We'd like to thank everyone involved for making the restoration of the Bandstand now a reality and cannot wait to see a restored Bandstand takes its rightful place in Centre Vale Park.
We look forward to working with the Town Council to bring this wonderful building back into use."
