The Brass Band Competence Centre in Jena, Germany continues to pioneer the development of future generations of brass playing talent.
It has been marked by the success of its latest initiative — 'When Youth Meets Experience'; a dynamic, inclusive training concept that combines traditional teaching methods with new outlooks.
60 young players
It recently saw a full day of activity where 60 young brass players were placed into small chamber groups, tailored not only by instrument, but also by age and ability level, with the ambition to learn together.
Speaking about the approach, Andrea Hobson, Musical Director of the Junior Brass Band KLANGwelt and Brass Band VielKLANG told 4BR: "This structure allows each child to develop at their own pace while gaining invaluable experience in ensemble playing."
Throughout the day, the approach drew impressive results, ones that were shown in a short concert to round off the event, where the Junior Brass Band KLANGwelt took to the stage under Andrea's baton to showcase their progress.
Amazing experience
Andrea added: "It proved to be an amazing experience — the collective approach bringing extra confidence and motivation."
The young members of Youth Brass Band BlechKLANG also showcased the progress thy made through the day with a set of music inspired by 'Heroes and Legends'.

Major change
Speaking about the success, Alexander Richter, Musical Director of Brass Band BlechKLANG told 4BR: "This was a major change in our approach but one that proved to be a great success. The shared sound, the shared stage, the shared experiences left a lasting impression on all who take part and who heard the end results."
He added: "We are fostering not only musical growth but also intergenerational connection — allowing players to sit in with people of all ages. This communal approach is central to our philosophy. It's about musical development, but also about building community and strengthening social bonds.
