The famous Parr Fold Bandstand in Walkden, Manchester is set to be brought back to life in 2026 as part of a new restoration scheme.
Built in the 1930s over the years it has also seen numerous performances given by the Besses o' th' Barn Band who hope to return to perform there next year armed with a new celebratory march.
Fund raising to return the bandstand to its former glory was spearheaded by the Friends of Parr Fold Park and supported by Salford City Council.
Composer competition
The band has now launched a new composer competition with a first prize of £250 for a new march, which should be "spirited, bold and rooted in tradition", or a short concert work that is, "expressive, imaginative and suitable for concert performance" — although both must have, "a recognisable hymn reference(s) woven into the score to signify a nod to the past and a gift to the future."
Closing date
The composer will also be given the opportunity to conduct their piece(s) live on the newly renovated Parr Fold Bandstand in Walkden performed by the band.
The closing date is: 31st March 2026
Next chapter
A band spokesperson stated: "Let your music help write the next chapter of Parr Fold's story — a place where generations gathered, and where brass banding returns with hope, heritage, and harmony.
All pieces submitted will be played over the forthcoming seasons and we will inform the composer when we do. It would be fantastic if we could perform a full programme of these pieces.
