The Rockingham Band has announced the appointment of Fiona Bishop as its new Musical Director.
The vastly experienced musician who studied under Prof David King and Roy Newsome at Salford University is the first female conductor of the band in its 175 year history, and was appointed following an extensive and competitive process.
After feedback from members, the band was drawn to her innovative approach to concert programming, and her proven record of contest success.
More recently Fiona has worked under the direction of Philip Harper and has conducted several successful ensembles, most recently led East Riding of Yorkshire Band.
Delighted
Speaking about her appointment, Fiona said: "I'm delighted and very much looking forward to working with the band in 2026 and beyond.
Returning to the Yorkshire area marks a significant milestone in my conducting career, which I am absolutely thrilled about."
Musical talent
In welcoming her, Band Chairperson Alex Parker added: "We are really pleased to have such a musical talent as Fiona come and work with us. We are also proud to be welcoming our first female MD."
Rockingham will now focus on preparations for the Yorkshire Regional Championships in March, and placed on record its thanks to outgoing MD Adam Whittle, who steps down after 10 years of outstanding leadership.
