Norwegian banding has been thrown into turmoil following the news that up to 11 bands could face potential relegation to the Fifth Division of the National Championships after failing to pay their annual Norwegian Music Federation membership fees on time.
4BR understands that it includes at least one Elite Division band as well as a prize winning band in another section in addition to other competitors at different levels.
Informed
Following enquiries, 4BR was told that the NMF informed bands in September 2025 of changes to payment procedure, although some subsequently stated that they were unaware of the importance, as the potential implications of non-payment by the given date were not sufficiently highlighted to them.
Bands are required to pay a player fee to compete at the National Championships (held on the 6th & 7th February this year) in Bergen. This must be paid before the event. Failure to do so precludes them from competing.
It is understood that NMF also stated in September that the annual membership fee had to be paid by the 15th February — around 25,000 Krone. Non-payment by the due date could result in relegation action being taken, although it is being argued that this was not made clear.
Reminder
4BR was informed that the bands involved were recently reminded of their non-payment in correspondence — although this was quickly followed by confirmation of relegation.
It is understood that the bands in question now have until the 10th March to submit an appeal to NMF. Each case will be taken on its individual merit concerning the reasons why payment was not made on time.
4BR has also been informed that at least one band ensured that payment was made immediately following their reminder notification yet still received notice of relegation.

Transparent process
One well respected source told 4BR that although it may appear that the NMF was taking severe action, it was hoped it was really to ensure that bands are made fully aware of the need to respect financial accountability.
"It looks a bit heavy handed," they said, "but in reality it's really to do with enforcing a transparent process. I hope this will be treated as a warning for bands to ensure they read the rules and guidance issued by NMF and act accordingly in future. Relegation to the Fifth Division would be too severe for this first time."
4BR has contacted the NMF for comment, whilst the topic has now become a matter for public discussion through the Brassers podcast.
