Drogheda Brass Band claimed the Section 1 Brass title at the Irish National Championships for the fifth time in a row at the Bohemian Centre, Ardee on the weekend.
Led by Stephen Murray, it was the 17th occasion that the band had lifted the National Trophy in triumph, thanks to what adjudicator Les Neish called "a truly stunning"rendition of the test piece, 'Friendly Takeover' by Oliver Waespi.
Memorable day
The band also claimed the silverware as 'Best Section 1 Band' and 'Best Overall Band of the Competition', whilst a memorable day was rounded off with MD Stephen Murray being presented with Honorary Life Membership of the IABCB, alongside John Harford of Blanchardstown Brass Band.
In a close contest, Navan Silver, directed by Kevin Teers came just a point behind as they sought their first top-flight title success. Their super rendition of the grove inspired set-work was aided by the excellent personal contribution of their 'Best Instrumentalist' euphonium player Shane Smith.
Third place went to 2015 winner Lourdes Brass ahead of 2025 Section 2 champion, Arklow Shipping.
Section 2:
In Section 2 there was success for INF Brass Band, as the Irish National Foresters reclaimed the title they last won in 2024 with a super rendition of their own-choice test-piece, 'Neverland' by Christopher Bond.
Fittingly, their fine flugel player Robert McGivney became the first recipient of the Jack Regan Memorial Trophy for 'Best Instrumentalist', donated by the INF Band in memory of their former conductor.
It saw them end a point clear of rivals The Stedfast Band who performed 'Henry V' by Vaughan Williams.
