Eikanger continues investment in youth development

The Norwegian National Champion has just held its 28th Feriespel Summer Course.

It's not only in the UK where brass band summer courses have been held in recent weeks.

In Norway, National Champion, Eikanger- Bjørsvik Musikklag hosted their long standing Feriespel Summer Camp.

80 young players

It was the 28th time that the course has been held. It is one which sees every player and member of the organisation take part in some way in providing tutoring or organisational help to support over 80 young players aged between 8 and 20 from the local Knarvik, Bergen and outlying areas.

Held at the band's headquarters, it saw them perform in three age related band set-ups, working with current and former Eikanger players who provided invaluable tutoring whilst a small army of volunteers ensured everyone was fed, watered and kept busy having fun in their breaks from playing.

Team effort

A spokesperson told 4BR: "As some were sitting next to the younger players offering support, others were in the kitchen preparing food, and others making sure the music was in order etc. It was another huge team effort."

The Beginners Band was led by Eikanger cornet player Nora Marie Hesjedal, whilst euphonium star Lars Otto Lunde Torsvik took the lead with the Middle Band. The hugely respected freelance conductor and composer Arian Pedersen led the Senior Band — completing a musical journey that started as young tuba on the course itself.

It is a responsibility to share knowledge, nurture young musicians, and build a brass band culture that is key to the band's ethosEikanger Bjorsvik Musikklag

Fantastic success

Speaking to 4BR, Eikanger-Bjørsvik's Chairperson, Frode Rydland SAID: "This year's Feriespel has been another fantastic success and further strengthens our commitment to the long-term investment and development of young players through community projects.

It is a responsibility to share knowledge, nurture young musicians, and build a brass band culture that is key to the band's ethos."
