Lawson treasures Shepherd award

Cory principal cornet player Kyle Lawson has spoken of his pride in being the first recipient of the James Shepherd Memorial Award at this year's National Final.

Kyle was presented with the award by Claire Chalk

Kyle Lawson not only helped Cory Band to claim a tenth National title success at the Royal Albert Hall on the weekend, but in the process became the proud first recipient of the James Shepherd Memorial Award.

As principal cornet, the New Zealander was presented with the beautifully refurbished echo cornet of the legendary former principal cornet of the Black Dyke Mills Band, whose own personal contributions from the end-chair helped the Queensbury band to win National titles in 1967 and 1972.

Although he passed away in 2023 the memory of his playing still retains an immediate magic that is reserved for a player universally regarded as one of the greatest in banding history.

Presentation

The presentation was made by Jim's daughter Claire Chalk, and will now be made each year to the principal cornet player of the winning band.

Kyle who has won numerous awards during his own career including being crowned three time senior Cornet Champion of New Zealand and Australian Open Cornet Champion. He was also awarded the 'Best Principal Cornet' accolade at the 2025 New Zealand National Championships.

Pinch myself

However, this award seems to have topped the lot so far: "Six months as Principal Cornet of Cory Band and a National title at the Royal Albert Hall, and receiving the inaugural James Shepherd Memorial Award is definitely a serious pinch-myself moment!"

He added: "Growing up back home in Wanganui, New Zealand, listening to James Shepherd's legendary playing was a serious inspiration for me. To be awarded his trophy personally by his daughter Claire Chalk and to be the first name on it, is something I will treasure forever.

I'm incredibly proud of this band, Philip Harper, and everyone involved in making Saturday so special. What a ride!"

Cardiff to Canada

Fans will be able to hear Kyle perform with the band at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on Sunday 11th October (3.00pm) as well as one their forthcoming tour to Canada and the USA.
