Two local schoolchildren recently wowed packed crowds in Middlesbrough and Gateshead.

Guest soloists

Kate Malcolm (cornet) and Hayley O’Connelley (trombone) were guest soloists of the Reg Vardy Band for their annual sponsor’s concerts at The King’s Academy in Middlesbrough and Emmanuel College, Gateshead.

Hayley and Kate impressed the band so much with their solo playing that they invited them to take part in the concert as well as playing their solos.

What a fabulous opportunity these local children have been given. I am so proud to be involved with the bandSir Peter Vardy

Trombone classic

Hayley performed the trombone classic, 'The Acrobat', and also joined the Reg Vardy trio of Chris Bentham, Peter Liddle and Jeff Bryant to play 'It’s Alright With Me'.

Kate chose to play the Barbara Streisand melody 'Evergreen', and then was joined by cornet players Graeme Tindall, Les Palmer and Nigel Brown to thrill the audience with 'Trumpets Wild'.

Fabulous opportunity

Saturday’s concert was attended by Sir Peter Vardy who commented to 4BR: "What a fabulous opportunity these local children have been given. I am so proud to be involved with the band."
