Percussion star Dave Danford will be donning the gloves and flash cape as he teams up in the near future with the 'Boxing Beats' Street Songs project — an exploration between music and sport first developed with Welsh National Opera.

Boxing Beats

The 'Boxing Beats' project will see Dave work with Welsh National Opera and Academi, and with boxers across amateur clubs in Caerphilly throughout February — April this year.

Boxers and singers

Working with writer Louise Walsh, herself a boxer, members will start to explore writing through journaling and adapting it into song lyrics with the help of composer, Petter Swaffer Reynolds and three professional opera singers.

Dave will also work with the boxers exploring rhythm and beats, using their hands in a different way through engaging with drumming techniques.

Song Battle

The final performance will take place as a "Song Battle" within the ring at one of the local boxing clubs, with a second performance on WMC Glanfa Stage in May.

Film

WNO Media Unit has commissioned award winning documentary film maker David Evans to create a film based around the Boxing Beats project for the WNO website. David is also a BAFTA winning director who also boxes in his spare time — at Gelligaer gym in the Valleys where part of the project will be held.
