Harrogate test pieces revealed

The set works for the Lower Section Finals have been revealed — with hopes that the Music Panel has done a good job this year...

Harrogate

The set works for the 2009 Lower Section National Finals have been announced by the organisers Kapitol Promotions.

Harrogate and London

Following the announcement of a new work from the pen of Peter Graham entitled, 'The Torchbearer – Symphonic Variations and Metamorphosis on a Theme by Eric Ball' for the Championship Section, the four works to be used at Harrogate have also been revealed.

More Vinter

The centenary of the birth of Gilbert Vinter will see his 'Triumphant Rhapsody' pitched at the bands in the First Section, whilst bands in the Second Section will have to get to grips with Alan Fernie's, 'A Scot's Miscellany'.

there will be a great deal of interest in hearing whether or not the panel has been able to pick pieces that accurately reflect the actual playing standards in each of the sections this year4BR

Oceans and skyscrapers

Third Section contenders are to try and overcome Goff Richard's 'Oceans', whilst there is a new work from the pen of Bruce Frser entitled 'Alta Vista' in the Fourth.

Interest

After the welcomed success of 'Salute to Youth' as the Championship Section set work at the Regionals this year, there will be a great deal of interest in hearing how the First Section bands get to grips with Vinter’s 1965 National Finals test piece.

Commission

Alan Fernie's new work has been commissioned for the forthcoming Bernese Kantonal competition in Switzerland and there three movement work takes inspiration from facets of Scottish life.

View from above

Goff Richard’s 'Oceans' hails back to 1984 and was originally used as a top section test piece, before subsequently being used as the Second Section Area work of 1994.

Bruce Fraser's new work meaning, 'view from above' depicts three of the tallest buildings in North America – the CN Tower in Toronto, the Empire State Building in New York and the Sears Tower in Chicago.

Debate

After the debate created by the choices of the Music Panel in recent years, there will be a great deal of interest in hearing whether or not the panel has been able to pick pieces that accurately reflect the actual playing standards in each of the sections this year.
