The Chronicles of Barnsley

Barnsley is in the news as they gain a paper sponsor.

Barnsley

The Barnsley Chronicle newspaper has come to the rescue of the Barnsley Building Society Band, following the recent announcement that their 21-year sponsorship deal with the company was to come to an end.

Double blow

It was a double blow for the band, which was recently hit by the news that they were unlikely to receive the £1,250 prize money they won at last years Pontin’s Championship.

And to add to their woes, Yorkshire Building Society, which took over the Barnsley Building Society, told the band last Monday that their two decade long sponsorship was to be terminated.

Fantastic news

However, the potentially crippling news was short lived as the Barnsley Chronicle stepped in with a new sponsorship deal. The band will now be known as The Barnsley Chronicle Band.

Band Chairman Pete Webster told 4BR: "Last week really was a double blow for us, finding out we were unlikely to receive our prize money, and at the same time losing our sponsorship. But this is fantastic."

Thanks

He added: "We would like to thank the Barnsley Building Society for their support over the last 21 years, but now the band is really looking forward to it's bright future as the Barnsley Chronicle Band."

It isn’t the first time that the Barnsley newspaper has been involved with the band as back in the 1980’s when they were known as Barrow Colliery, the Chronicle sponsored their junior band.
