Williams memory at Brangwyn Hall

There may be a keen battle for glory today in Swansea, but people will take time to remember one of the finest players to grace the Brangwyn Hall stage.

Ian Williams
The memory of Ian Williams will be at the forefront of many people's minds at Swansea

The Welsh Regional Championship reaches its climax this afternoon when eight top-flight bands battle for the honour of becoming Champion Band of Wales, as well as qualifying for the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall and representing the nation at the 2019 European Championship in Montreux.

However, amid the competitive action and celebrations many minds will still be drawn to the memory of Ian Williams, the former principal cornet player of Cory Band, who tragically died on March 1st aged just 52.

Ian graced contest stages throughout the banding world, and especially the Welsh Regional contest in Swansea where for over 20 years he helped Cory to numerous title successes.

Remarkable talents

A performer of remarkable talents, he was one of the first to enjoy a pint with his fellow players after a victory, but also one of the first to offer congratulations to others — a trait that marked him out as one of the most respected players in Welsh banding.

Funeral details

Ian's funeral will be held at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff (CF5 2LA) on Wednesday 21st March at 3.00pm.
