The 36th Ern Keller Memorial “International Soloist of the Year” and the 21st Ern Keller Memorial “Band of the Year” will take place on Sunday 21 February 2010 at the St Mary's Band Club, Sydney.

International

The prestigious International Soloist of the Year event undertakes an exciting expansion with the inclusion of representatives from Japan, the United States, and the Federation of Australasian Brass Bands (FABB), to add to the usual representation from the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

Event Producer and Director of the St Marys Band Club, Ken Bradley told 4BR, "We are extremely excited about the new links formed with Japan, the United States, and the Federation of Australasian Brass Bands, adding to the prestige and profile of this important event on the world brass calendar."

The current New Zealand National Champion Paula Russell has declined the invitation to attend, but 2009 NZ Champion of Champions runner-up Phil Johnstone will be the country's representative this year.

The Adjudicator

The Adjudicator for the day is Steve Rosse. The American Steve Rosse enjoys a diverse international career as an orchestral tubist, tuba soloist, educator, and presenter of international festivals. Based in Sydney, Australia as Principal Tuba with the Sydney Symphony, Rosse also lectures at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney.

Band of the Year

"Band of the Year" entrants are Holroyd City Brass Band, St Marys Band Club Brass Band, and Warringah Concert Brass.

Doors open at 1pm and admission is free.

Mid Rhondda Band

January 6 • Mid Rhondda Band are currently looking for a trombone player and percussionists to join the team. We are a friendly, welcoming 3rd section band working towards competing in the Welsh Area in March. We also have a variety of events booked for 2026.


The Marple Band

January 6 • Bb Bass and Tuned Percussionist vacancies to join our fabulous band. We are a friendly, ambitious 2nd Section band, starting an exciting new year.


Christchurch Vintage Brass

January 6 • Bb Bass required for our friendly non contesting day time band. We rehearse Monday afternoons from 13:30 in Southbourne near Bournemouth with refreshments afterwards. MD Steve Chislett.
