Details have been announced of the second European Youth Brass Contest, which will take place as part of the 2015 European Championships in Freiburg.

Exciting coda

EBBA hopes that the event, which will feature Premier and Development Sections on Sunday 3rd May, will provide the 38th Championship with an exciting and ambitious musical coda to its main competition features, that will see the senior European title decided the day before.

In a press release EBBA stated: “The European Youth Brass Band Contest will provide a platform for Europe’s finest youth brass bands to perform a programme which is musically excellent and entertaining in a competitive environment.”

Cultural diversity

They added: “In doing so, this will encourage the development of youth brass bands throughout the member countries of EBBA, fostering enduring links between the young people taking part and will help to create a better understanding of the cultural diversity throughout Europe.”

Each member country has been asked to nominate up to two youth bands to take part in either the Premier or Development Sections, who will perform at the impressive Konzerthaus venue.

Time

However, the deadline for entries is 31st January, leaving little time for some member countries to raise the necessary finances, or to sort out the logistics of getting to the event.

EBBA states the competitions are open to ‘established youth, school, regional, national or project bands’, consisting of ‘…a minimum of 25 players and a maximum of 50’.

Premier and Development

The Premier Section bands will have to perform a programme of music of up to 25 minutes in duration; consisting of a set work, ‘Arcana’ by Belgian composer Kevin Houben, as well as a solo feature.

The Development Section bands will have to perform a programme of music up to 20 in duration; consisting of a set work, ‘Patterns’ by Edward Gregson, as well as a solo feature.

‘Arcana’ was the first prize winner of EBBA’s European Composers Competition in 2006.

It is published by Scherzando Music and is available from De Haske.

‘Patterns’ was originally commissioned for the Butlins National Youth Championships of Great Britain in 1974.

It is published by Studio Music.
