2019 will see the return of Iain Culross to Grimethorpe Colliery Band as principal cornet.

The Scotsman previously performed in the role between 2013 and 2015 and makes the move from the end chair at Leyland Band. He will take up the appointment on Grimethorpe's return to rehearsal in January.

Critical acclaim

The talented musician holds a B.A. (Hons) degree in Music as well as an M.A. in Music Performance from Salford University, and in the past few years has gained critical acclaim for his solo and band performances, holding master classes and appearing as guest soloist with various bands around the world.

He has also been principal cornet of Fairey, Sellers International, YBS and the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery, before his first spell at Grimethorpe and more latterly at Leyland (above).

Welcome back

A Grimethorpe spokesperson told 4BR: "We're delighted to welcome back Iain. As a player of international renown and experience he joins us at an exciting time in our future development.

The band members are looking forward to working with him to ensure that Grimethorpe continues to build upon its unique history of artistic and performance excellence."

Thrilled

In response Iain said: "I'm also delighted to be returning to Grimethorpe Colliery Band. There is no bigger or more famous name in the brass band world, and the vision which the band has developed for their future is exciting and positive. I'm thrilled to have been asked to play a part in it."

On his Twitter account he added: "Thanks to Leyland Band for a brilliant two and a half years. I Never imagined leaving but sometimes opportunities come along that mean it's time for a change. Wishing the band and everyone involved all the very best for the future."

It was also confirmed that Prof Roger Webster will continue to play with the band as assistant principal cornet.
