Buzz off after New Zealand Nationals

Byron Newton will make his final appearance with defending champion Wellington Brass at the forthcoming New Zealand National Championships.

Byron Newton
Byron 'Buzz' Newton has established himself as one of the finest euphonium players in the southern hemisphere.

4BR has been informed that after nearly a decade as principal euphonium with Wellington Brass, Byron Newton has decided to step away from the role.

'Buzz' as he is known throughout the banding world will step down from the role with the current National Champion following the upcoming New Zealand National Championships which start in Hamilton this week.

Right time

Speaking to 4BR he said: "The time feels right to step aside and to focus on family. Wellington Brass deserves 100% commitment throughout the year which I've been unable to achieve over the past year since becoming a father.

The band has been a huge part of my life, with many highs such as five New Zealand National titles, doing the Austrliasian 'Double' in 2015 and 2018, as well as memorable events such as the Wellington Oktoberfest, the British Open tour in 2016, and a host of fantastic concerts and projects."

Tough decision

He added: "It has been an extremely tough decision, but one I hope will be mutually beneficial to both me and the band. I feel that the Wellington organisation is in a much better state than when I joined with so many quality players in the ranks.

I would like to thank everyone associated with the band who have helped to keep things driving forward — in particular members of the band's committee.

Wellington Brass has become a leading light in New Zealand music making not only as an ensemble but as an innovative organisation.

I'll enjoy some time off from regular banding with my main focus on being a stay at home dad, but I'm sure to be playing in a band again soon."
