Yorkshire Youth enjoy latest get together

The talented youngsters of the Yorkshire Youth Band have enjoyed their latest musical get together under the baton of Black Dyke Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs.

Yorkshire Youth
Richard Marshall led the talented cornet section on the weekend

The talented youngsters of the Yorkshire Youth Band enjoyed a day of hard work, great music and plenty of fun on their latest weekend gathering in Saddleworth.

Led by Black Dyke Director of Music, Prof Nicholas Childs, and helped by the continued support of Besson Musical Instruments, the music performed included 'Bandology', 'Fanfare and Flourishes', 'Bugler's Holiday' and Peter Graham's 'Heroes of the North'.

Star help

The players also benefited from the help of Queensbury stars Richard Marshall, Brett Baker Dan Thomas, Dave Smith, Siobhan Bates, John O'Brien, Adam Neild, Matt Routley and Neil Edwards. Over 50 young musicians took part, with the logistics and organisation expertly handled by Course Administrators Alison and Rebecca Childs.

After a morning of sectional rehearsals and full band, the students were involved in a masterclass from Richard, Brett and Dan which focused on posture, breath control and pre and post playing exercises, before a final rehearsal and a short concert for parents and friends.

Bubbling

Richard was certainly pleased by the commitment on show and the performances of the cornet players in particular, as he told 4BR: "We had three fantastic youngsters playing 'Bugler's Holiday'," he said. "They all showed what a great future there is for the brass band movement in Yorkshire and beyond!

With this band everyone benefits; especially the players who go back to their own bands bubbling with enthusiasm."

Inclusive

Meanwhile, Alison Childs told 4BR that she was especially delighted that newest members are enjoying the experience from the very first note they play.

"It's been great to see the first time players fit in straight away, enjoying the atmosphere and inclusivity that is the essential part of the band's ethos.

We've already received applications for the 2019/2020 courses, and I would encourage lots more to do the same. The Yorkshire Youth Band will perform at the Black Dyke Brass Festival on the 2nd June at Leeds Town Hall and thanks to the support of Besson Musical Instruments we can help the future stars fulfil their potential."

The next Yorkshire Youth Band course will be on Sunday, 17th November, 2019.
