Haverhill to premier new Falklands work

Haverhill Silver Band is to feature a brand new work inspired by the Falklands Conflict as well as welcoming Cory's Tom Hutchinson as a guest soloist.

Falklands
The work recalls a rarely known part of the Falklands Conflict.

Haverhill Silver Band is looking forward to inspiring both young and old at their forthcoming concert.

Not only will they be joined by Cory principal cornet Tom Hutchinson as their guest soloist, they will also give the world premiere of a new work by composer Craig Sanders.

Yompers

Entitled, 'The Yompers', it depicts the story of 45 Commando Royal Marines' role in the 1982 Falklands Conflict as told in Ian Gardiner's book of the same name.

Craig, whose father Antony plays solo euphonium in the band, is a full time Royal Marine and has a close connection with Haverhill.

The piece depicts five key events during the conflict — starting with the Argentinean Invasion, followed by the British task force setting sail, 'The Yomp', the battle for Two Sisters and the final part that reflects and remembers the pride of being British.

Understanding

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "Craig travelled to the Falkland Islands with the Royal Marines in 2013, which gave him an understanding of the brutal conditions that the British and Argentine forces fought in.

The story of 45 Commando 'Yomping' across the Islands is not commonly known, and he felt it should be shared through this composition."

Hutchinson welcome

They added: "Craig will play with the band on percussion, and we are honoured to be premiering the work. All this and we are delighted to feature Tom Hutchinson as guest soloist.

He is a wonderful player who is sure to thrill the audience with his solo playing. It's going to be a concert to remember."

Further details

The concert takes place at Haverhill Arts Theatre (7.30pm) on Sunday 24th September.
