Yorkshire Youth enjoy weekend work

The talented players of the Yorkshire Youth Band have been putting in the hard work ahead of two high profile concert dates.

Black Dyke Festival

The Yorkshire Youth Brass Band enjoyed a successful gathering at Robert Wilkinson Primary School, in York recently.

Prepare

Course Administrator, Alison Childs told 4BR that the latest rehearsal weekend saw over 50 young players put in a great deal of hard work in preparation for their performances at the forthcoming concerts at Leeds Town Hall and York Minster on May 19th and June 1st respectively.

"It was a tremendous weekend of work and fun," Alison said. "These are two very high profile concerts for the band, and they are determined to showcase their talents in full."

Buzz

MD, Dr Nicholas Childs added: "There is such a buzz when we have the talented players of the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band together.

The tutors Sheona White, Brett Baker, Gary Curtin, Matt Routley, John O'Brien, Zoe Hancock and Rory Farrell thoroughly enjoyed themselves too, whilst the players revelled in the experience.

It’s amazing to see them develop in confidence – and counting down the days to the concerts!"

Workshop opportunities

Brett Baker was certainly enthused: "We still have some places for new members for the next concert, where there will also be workshops led by Richard Marshall, Garry Curtin and myself. The players will also share the stage with Black Dyke in front of an audience of over 1000 people."

Black Dyke's euphonium star Garry Curtin added: "The students really enjoyed the music, with Paul Lovatt-Cooper's ‘Wall of Sound’ still echoing in everyone's ears!

However, the players also put in a great deal of hard work for their performance of Eric Ball's arrangement of ‘Suite Gothique’. With over 150 players on stage to play it at the concerts it will be a performance to remember."

It’s amazing to see them develop in confidence – and counting down the days to the concerts!Dr Nicholas Childs

Places

Places are still available, for the Cornet Showcase, Lower Brass Spotlight or Trombone workshops, playing in a band with an age group of 11-21.

There is the added attraction that it is also the band that gets the best pizza party in Yorkshire too!

Motto

As Alison added: "The Yorkshire Youth Band offers such a wonderful opportunity for young players – and we really do believe in the motto “Don't just play your instrument, enjoy the moment being part of Yorkshire's Premier Youth Band!"
