Grimethorpe Colliery Band has announced that Dr Robert Childs has become their new Principal Conductor & Director of Music.

Delighted

Band Manager Nigel Dixon told 4BR: "We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the most successful conductors of his generation.

Everyone at Grimethorpe is looking forward to a new and exciting era benefiting from Bob’s wealth of experience and musical leadership."

Reinvigorate

Their former principal euphonium player recently returned to reinvigorate a band that last tasted major contesting success in 2010, leading them to top six finishes at both the National Finals and Brass in Concert.

His first competitive appearance in his new role will be at a much anticipated Yorkshire Regional Championship at St George’s Hall in March.

Thrilled

Dr Childs told 4BR: "I’m thrilled to accept this new position.

Grimethorpe is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in the brass band world and I’m looking forward to working with them on a regular basis."

Control

It is understood that the European, National, British Open and Brass in Concert winning conductor will take responsibility for all musical matters, including programming, personnel and guest conductors.

This will include contests, recording projects and selective concert work. In addition he has also accepted an invitation to become a trustee of the band.
