John Winterflood celebrates with cup

Just three years after they were formed, Brunel Brass from the West of England region, has been crowned National Third Section champions.

Fine account

Conducted by John Winterflood, the band, which is a real mix of young and old, produced a fine account of Goff Richard’s breezy ‘Oceans’ to secure the title off the early number 3 draw.

Outstanding

The band’s soprano cornet player Paul Richards deservedly won the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award for his outstanding contribution, and the former principal cornet of the Sun Life Band was delighted to be presented with his trophy by his old mentor at the band, Dr Roy Newsome.

In what proved to be an enjoyable contest full of high standard playing, it was the last band, North Skelton from the North East region that pushed Brunel all the way4br

High standard

In what proved to be an enjoyable contest full of high standard playing, it was the last band, North Skelton from the North East region that pushed Brunel all the way.

In third place came Cubbington Silver from the Midlands, whilst the remaining top six places were filled by Douglas Town, Coalburn Silver and Royal Buckley.

Steam

There was no denying the West of England outfit though, and the band that takes its name from the great railway engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel had plenty to enjoy after steaming to their first National title.
