160th celebrations at Boarshurst

160 years of brass banding in Greenfield is celebrated by the Boarshurst Band with a new march.

Boarshurst

Boarshurst Band recently celebrated 160 years of existence with new music and the appointment of a Composer in Residence.

60 years

Boarshurst was formed in December 1849 in the Saddleworth village of Greenfield, and to commemorate the event, and the 30th Anniversary of the opening of the Boarshurst Band Club, the band's MD, David W Ashworth approached, Keith Lever OBE, MBE, to write a special street march for the band.

Greenbridge

Entitled 'Greenbridge', and named after Greenbridge Lane, where the famous Band Club is sited, the band will be playing their new march at next year's Saddleworth Whit Friday contests.

Friendship

As a result of their 40 years of friendship, David also asked Keith if he would accept the position of Composer in Residence, an offer Keith gladly accepted.

Numerous pieces of new music, ranging from fanfares to solo works and concert items have already been discussed and will be included to the bands 2010 concert pogrammes.
