19 year old Matthew White has become the 'BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist for 2010' following his 'Extraordinary' performance at the RNCM in Manchester on Saturday evening.

Matthew’s rendition of the 2nd and 3rd Movements of Peter Graham’s concerto, 'In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen' was enough to convince judges Richard Evans and Philip Cobb that he should be declared the 2010 winner and take the prestigious award.

Third time lucky

Victory came at the third attempt for Matthew, who is currently principal euphonium with Pemberton Old DW Band as well as the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Bit extra

Both judges praised the finalists for their performances on the night. Richard Evans told 4BR: "There was some excellent playing with the winner having that little bit extra. He was so well prepared."

High standard

Jonathan Bates, Ben Richeton and Zoe Hancock all played their part in what became a truely high class final.

Jonathan included Bellstedt’s popular 'Cappricio Brillante’ in his programme, whilst Ben opted for William Himes’ 'Jubilance' for his challenge.

Zoe Hancock performed ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Song and Dance’ in her bid to become the second Tredegar player in a row to take the title.

All of the soloists were accompanied by Black Dyke conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs.

Final broadcast on Radio 2

The final will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Friday 26th February at 9.30pm.

A retrospective of the final will appear on 4BR in the next few days.
