Results: Kirkby Lonsdale Contest

Greenalls triumph at Kirkby Lonsdale Contest with Pilling Jubilee taking the Fourth Section honours.

Greenalls Band, under the direction of Karl Stott, won the Third Section and overall honours at the recent 24th annual Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Contest.

The band also took home with them the prizes for ‘Best March’ and ‘Best Hymn’.

Hazel Grove took second prize and the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ for solo euphonium player, Gareth Beasley. Lofthouse 2000 was third.

Fourth Section winners

Pilling Jubilee Silver Band won the Fourth Section and the ‘Best Hymn’ trophy with Sale Brass securing second place and the prize for ‘Best March’. Tarleton and District was third.

Pilling Jubilee Silver won the entertainment prize, whilst the Deportment award went to Brindle Band.

Main street marching

Nine bands took part in the contest, each marching down the main street to the local Market Square to play their programme. This year the contest format had been revised to include a more entertaining approach and was a great success with the large crowd.

Contest controller Derek Atkinson kept the proceedings moving deportment judge John Knewstubb walked several miles during the afternoon closely observing the bands as they marched to the square.

The event closed with a programme of marches and hymns by the massed bands conducted by Steve Houghton of Kirkby Lonsdale Band4BR

Adjudicators at the contest were Graham O’Connor (music), Alan Lawton MBE (entertainment) and John Knewstubb (deportment).
