New Year's Honour for Steve Large

Andover Town MD Steve Large has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year's Honours List.

Medal

The brass band movement in the UK will be joining in the celebrations for conductor Steve Large, after it was announced that the Andover Town Band Musical Director has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to brass band music in the New Year’s Honours List.

Life long

Steve revealed to 4BR that his life long brass banding passion started at the age of 2, when his father gave him a go at conducting with his baton. He has since gone on to enjoy an outstanding musical career, first within the Salvation Army, and then when moving to Hampshire to enjoy 22 years with Test Valley Brass before more latterly setting up Andover Town Band.

Surprise

"It did come as a wonderful surprise," he told 4BR.

"It really is in recognition of all the wonderful people I have been lucky to have associated with, and who have worked so hard over the years to provide brass band music making in the local community."

All about players

That is something Steve feels is essential to ensuring the future of the brass band movement in the UK.

"It’s not just about young players — it’s about all players, and getting your band to become a local focal point of music making.

Lots of people have shared my love of brass bands and have worked so hard to help me — most importantly my family."

Support

Steve’s wife Alison and teenage children Emily and Adam, who play solo cornet and soprano in Andover Town Band, have offered immense support.

He added proudly: "I can’t thank them enough — and this honour goes to them too."

Thanks

Steve also paid thanks to the people involved in Test Valley Brass where he spent 22 great years and to David Thompson of Mitutoyo Precision Instruments who have also given invaluable support.

"These are all wonderful people who have enabled both Test Valley and now Andover to become so successful and such integral parts of the local community in which they serve."

Perfect Day

Steve hasn’t yet been informed when he will be presented with his British Empire Medal Steve doesn’t yet know when he will be presented with his BEM, although he hopes his family will be with him on a very special day.

"I’m really looking forward to it," he said. "I just hope they have some brass band music playing in the background when it gets presented to me — that would be perfect."
