The 28th annual Kirkby Lonsdale Contest was held on Sunday 21st June, with Sedbergh Town Youth Band giving an excellent performance and presentation to take the honours and Goff Richards Trophy in the Junior Section.

Excellent performances

Adjudicator Ewan Easton spoke of his pleasure at hearing the excellent performances throughout the day, and although the weather was showery from time to time, an enthusiastic crowd also enjoyed themselves enormously.

The senior bands marched down the town's Main Street to the Market Square , watched carefully by deportment adjudicator John Knewstubb, in his now legendary blue cap, to play their programmes.

Greenall's take all

Come the results, Greenall's Band under Phil Boardman enjoyed a highly successful day. They took the trophies for the 'Best March', 'Best Hymn' and 'Best Entertainment' as well as being declared overall winners. The band's star trombonist Simon Cowen won the 'Best Soloist' prize.

Prizes

The deportment prize was awarded to Pilling Jubilee Silver Band, with John Knewstubb impressed with their marching skills.

Meanwhile, Tarleton Band received the trophy for being the highest placed Fourth Section band coming fourth in the overall competition.

Derek Atkinson kept the proceedings moving with his usual expertise and the event closed with a massed band concert of marches and hymns conducted by Iwan Lewis of Sedbergh Town Band
