19th Century Law

The 19th century law, which levied a 40-shilling fine on recalcitrant musicians, is one of 328 obsolete pieces of legislation which the Law Commission wants to repeal.

Repeal

It will be taken off the books as part of the 18th Statute Law (Repeals) Bill, to be presented to Parliament shortly and covers subjects including turnpikes, workhouses and even a 1960s Channel tunnel initiative.

The 1839 City of London Police Act contained a clause to counteract the proliferation of Victorian brass bands and street organs.
