It's Downie for London

As reported, Kenneth Downie will be providing the test piece for the National Finals at London — now there's a surprise...

Downie

As the bookies anticipated, it will be Kenneth Downie who will be providing the best bands in the land with the test piece to overcome at the Royal Albert Hall in October.

Concertino

4BR had reported that the piece to be used was likely to be his ‘Concerto for Brass Band’, written for Brass Band Treize Etoile to be used at the Swiss National Championships in 2007.

Time constraints

However, with time constraints and with a full field of 20 plus bands, the composer has pared down his initial composition, taking out its Scherzo movement and has delivered an amended work lasting around 12 minutes and now called, appropriately enough, ’Concertino for Brass Band’.

It will be published through the composer’s own company Kanataramusik and will go one sale from the 2nd July through SP&S Publishing.

I do believe that the ‘new’ piece, although in a different shape, has a convincing balanceKenneth Downie

Interview

In an interview on the Kapitol Promotions website he states: "The revised ‘Concertino for Brass Band’ now has a different shape. However, I do believe that the ‘new’ piece, although in a different shape, has a convincing balance and it is my intention to publish the scherzo as a separate movement, to be performed either on its own or as part of the larger Concerto for Brass Band."
