Motor City in benefit event

The Motor City Brass Band is set to appear in a concert in September in aid of a worthy cause.

On Sunday, September 21, Motor City Brass Band will appear in a concert to benefit the Girlstown Foundation and Michigan Youth Leadership.

Presented by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Dearborn, the performance will take place at 3:00 pm at Dearborn’s First Presbyterian Church, located at 600 N. Brady Road (48124). Donations will be collected at the concert, and admission is free of charge.

Patriotic programme

The programme will feature a number of patriotic pieces, dating from the Revolutionary War era through today. Among the pieces performed will be Lincoln Portrait—Aaron Copland’s celebrated work featuring the words of Abraham Lincoln—and American Heroes, a reverent tribute to the members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Also included on the program will be Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns, one of the great songs of American musical theater.

The Girlstown Foundation is a residential treatment facility for teenaged girls. The organization also offers a foster care programme for children. Founded by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, Michigan, Girlstown celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Michigan Youth Leadership (“MYLead”) is a three-day conference held each May for outstanding tenth-grade students in Michigan. The programme encourages and empowers the young men and women who are thought to be Michigan’s “leaders of tomorrow”. Girlstown, MYLead and MCBB are some of the many organizations that receive support from the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

40 members

MCBB is a 40-member band that combines the grand sound of the traditional British brass band with an “Americanization” of spirit and enthusiasm. The band has become known for its spirited performances and flair for entertainment, as well as the wide range of musical styles it covers. The ensemble’s unique blend of innovation and authenticity has earned it a reputation for artistic excellence and first-rate entertainment, ensuring a constant demand for performances.

Consisting of volunteer brass and percussion players from throughout the metro Detroit area, the band performs over 20 concerts a year, including a four-concert series at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn. For more information, visit www.mcbb.org.
