Grimethorpe Tour: Day 4 — Sydney demands more

Forget the cricket — the Aussies can't get enough of another all conquering English team it seems...

sTATE tHEATRE

Grimethorpe may have bid Brisbane a fond farewell, making the 'short' two hour internal flight on to Sydney — but the reception in Australia's most famous city has been just as remarkable.

As soon as the band touched down they headed immediately to ABC Broadcasting House to record a broadcast for the nationwide Music Show at the Eugene Goosens Hall.

Musical scene

The weekly programme takes an in-depth look at the contemporary musical scene in Australia — featuring regular interviews and features with leading home grown as well as international music stars that visit the country.

The programme is presented by composer Andrew Ford — no stranger to brass banding having written for the medium, including his work, 'The Rising' for the RNCM Festival of Brass, where it was premiered by Black Dyke.

Interview

The ABC broadcast opened with Barry Forgie's up-tempo 'Big Band Tribute' followed by an interview with Dr Robert Childs about Grimethorpe and the brass band musical genre, before closing with a performance of Dan Price's 'Peacemakers'.

Phenomenal

Dr Robert Childs told 4BR: "Once again the interest in the band continues to be phenomenal, and as soon as we touched down in Sydney we were asked to come to the ABC studios.

It's great to see a nationwide arts programme take such an interest in brass bands — and in Grimethorpe in particular. It's yet another highlight on a tour that is becoming more memorable by the day."

That was certainly seen and heard after their performance at the wonderful art-deco State Theatre (above), as well over 1000 people demanded more encores — five minutes after the band had left the stage!

Fair to say!

Tour Manager Craig Roberts told 4BR: "It would be fair to say that the band went down well!

Dr Childs once again had to limit things to two encores of 'Hora Staccato' and 'Toccata in D Minor' — then literally had to be held backstage before they could pack away. The band could have played all night as the audience was still demanding more!"

Onto Canberra

The band now head to the Australian capital of Canberra, via a quick photo shoot at Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
