Death of Granville Parker

4BR has been informed of the death of Emley Band stalwart, Granville Parker.

Emley Band

Granville was a highly respected and popular player on trombone, euphonium, baritone and tuba with the Emley Band for around 60 years, until stepping down a number of years ago.

Key player

A man of great humour, he would tell people that his best instrument was the pub baritone, although in truth he was a key member of the band during the late 1960's and early 1970's. From 1966 to 1974, Emley was ‘placed’ in 27 of 37 contests they entered.

A spokesperson for the band told 4BR: “Granville often helped out other local bands, receiving several tempting offers from 'bigger' rivals — although his fierce loyalty was always to village band, staying with Emley through thick and thin.”

They added: “Granville will be missed by everyone in the village, as he was always around and had a wave for anyone he saw — and would always talk banding with anyone who showed an interest in the village pubs!”

The funeral will take place at Crigglestone Crematorium on Wednesday 7th January, at 2.40pm. Jeremy, Granville's son has asked for donations to the band in lieu of flowers. The Emley Band will play at the service.
