Birchfield Music, an exciting new publishing company for brass band music has been launched.

Iain Rayner is currently Musical Director of Kibworth Band, has had music published and performed for more than 15 years in the UK and abroad.

Significant

His first significant work for brass band, an arrangement of Smetana’s ‘Dance of the Comedians’ was performed and recorded by the Salvation Army’s International Staff Band back in 1996 and he has since had further works performed and published by the Salvation Army.

Branching out into the wider brass band world, he won the NABBC Young Composers’ Competition in 2000 with his concert work ‘Tsunami’ and in 2002 was a finalist in Brussels in the European Young Composers’ Competition with his piece ‘Eclipse’.

Set tests

His composition, ‘Cavendish Suite’ was chosen as the set test piece for the 4th Section in the 2006 Mineworkers Festival and since then he has had music performed up and down the country and overseas.

Iain is a former euphonium player in HM Life Guards Band (Houshold Cavalry) and Deputy Bandmaster of the renowned Kettering Citadel Salvation Army Band and as such has considerable playing, as well as conducting experience. He gained a BA (Hons) in Brass Band Studies studying under Richard Evans, Arthur Butterworth and Darrol Barry and in his final year gained both the composition and conducting awards.

Notable bands

Notable bands that have played and recorded his work include The International Staff Band, Brighouse & Rastrick, Virtuosi GUS and Leyland and he has also written for soloists including James Fountain and David Daws. Sheona White, principal horn of Black Dyke Band has recently performed his music on the latest recording by Leicester-based Salvo Brass, where Iain has been composer in residence in recent years.

New titles

Some of Iain’s existing titles are already published by Daventry-based Danetre Music but Iain’s other works and any new material will be published by Birchfield Music, based in Northampton.

Included in the titles are a number of solos and trios which are ideal for outdoor or indoor concerts as well as lighter numbers and more substantial original works for brass band.
