The sound of Easington Colliery Band will be heard by millions of people in the run up to Christmas after it was revealed that they had teamed up with singer-songwriter Sam Fender to help provide the soundtrack to this year's John Lewis & Partners festive advert.
Don't give up on giving
Over the years the company's advert has become one of the most eagerly anticipated on television. This year it features actor Dame Kristin Scott Thomas alongside 'Pickles the dog' (voiced by Paul Whitehouse) in a tale of rediscovering the festive joy in gifting — with the tagline, 'Don't give up on giving'.
For the musical accompaniment Sam Fender has provided a new cover version of the Rolling Stones hit, 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'.
Brass section
Speaking about the music he said: "It was a privilege to rework such an iconic song by such a legendary band. In the spirit of Christmas, we re-recorded the children's choir with the kids from my old school, John Spence Community High School, and we arranged a brass section with the Easington Colliery Band."
Reflecting on their involvement, the band stated: "Still can't quite believe we're saying this…
It's been a fantastic experience and one we'll be talking about for a long time. Massive thanks to everyone involved for making it happen."
Great job
One impressed listener was a certain Mick Jagger who added: "I'm a fan of Sam's work, so I was pleased to hear he was covering one of my songs. I think he's done a great job with it."
Profits from the sale of the record and each CD, which are expected to be around £18,000 will go to Action for Children.
