National Youth set to shine at BiC

Bramwell Tovey will lead the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at the Brass in Concert weekend in Gateshead.

The organisers of Brass in Concert have revealed details of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain’s performance at this year’s World of Brass in Concert at The Sage Gateshead.

The event, which will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the organisation, will see the band conducted by Bramwell Tovey, perform a number of iconic works, including ‘Chorale and Variations’ by Leighton Lucas, ‘Elegy and Minuet’ from ‘A Downland Suite’ by John Ireland, the ‘Finale’ from ‘Checkmate’ by Sir Arthur Bliss and ‘Blitz’ by Derek Bourgeois.

Other lighters works such as ‘Bugler’s Holiday’ will also be included in a programme aimed to cater for all tastes.

BiC’s John Woods told 4BR: "We are delighted to be able to welcome the NYBBGB and look forward to hearing a programme of great brass band music under the baton of Bramwell Tovey, whose worldwide reputation as a conductor will enhance what already promises to be a great event."

Early starts

There are slightly earlier starts to the event on the weekend of 17th/18th November this year, with the World of Brass in Concert Gala Concert featuring the NYBBGB, Cory and Black Dyke starting at 7.00pm on Saturday 17th November, with the main contest starting at 9.00am on Sunday 18th November.

Elland Silver Youth Band, conducted by Samantha Harrison, will give a short concert before the announcement of results at approximately 6.00pm.

Increased prize money

John also added: "We are very grateful to Harry Banks of the Banks Group for providing us with additional sponsorship this year, which will allow us to increase the cash prizes on offer to bands in the competition."

May 15 • We are seeking an enthusiastic and musically skilled Associate Conductor to lead and develop our band alongside our current Musical Director Phil Goodwin. . Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays, 8-10pm at Delph Band Club.
