New Christmas premiere for Sheldon

Christmas is certainly just around the corner for the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band...

The Sheldon Theatre Brass Band from Red Wing in Minnesota, USA, will give the world premiere of a new composition by well known composer Glen Newton later this month.

New work

The new work is a bit out of the ordinary as it was originally conceived as a Christmas song for vocalist with brass band, rather than re-arranged or transcribed from other media.

Happy picture

The composer told 4BR: "My piece, ‘Christmas is Just ‘Round the Corner’ paints a happy picture of a family reunited at the holidays after an overseas military deployment, a situation that has become common in the United States in the past few years."

Generations

Newton is a third-generation composer and an emerging presence in the banding world. Whereas his mother and grandfather were both well known for their compositions for piano and violin, he focuses on music for wind instruments and jazz ensembles.

He began writing original works for instrumental and vocal ensembles in sixth grade and has since had a number of compositions performed by concert bands, orchestras, vocal ensembles, jazz bands, and brass ensembles in the United States and abroad.
