Foden's aim for more percussion talent

The upcoming Foden's Solo Competition needs more percussion talent — so come along and enjoy yourselves on whatever you want to play!

Percussion

Whilst the Foden’s Band is currently preparing for the defence of its National title in London, arrangements are in full swing to ensure the success of their eagerly anticipated Solo Competition on November 2nd at Sandbach School in Cheshire.

Closing date

With the closing date just a few days away (5th October) the response has been incredible, but there are still a few spaces left up for grabs – especially in the percussion classes.

Encourage percussion

Organiser Fiona Rolfe told 4BR: "Foden’s is keen to encourage more percussion players to take part.

We have several entries so far, but would be delighted to see more, especially since our very own principal percussionist Mark Landon is to adjudicate these sections and will be on hand throughout the day to help and advice.”

Extended closing date

Percussionists will now have until the 26th of October to get their entries in.

Fiona added: "As it’s a first in terms of offering percussion sections, there has been no precedent set, so we hope to hear as wide a variety of music and styles, be it modern and upbeat, or the more familiar pieces as possible. Just come along and enjoy having a go!"

Help with instruments

Fiona also added that percussion instruments are being provided to help with possible travel problems, as are sticks — though anyone choosing to play instruments such as steel drums will have to provide their own as they are not a common staple in the band room!

Even steel drums

She concluded: "Timpani are included in the un-tuned section, drum kit players can use backing accompaniment, and should let us know on their application form so that we can make a cd player/ipod docking station available.

This is the ideal opportunity for percussion players to showcase their talents and receive constructive comments from one of the finest percussionists in the brass band world."
