Dr Peter Meechan has been commissioned to write music to commemorate the centenary of World War 1 and in particular, the selfless sacrifice and heroism of the Accrington ‘Pals’ Battalion.

Initiative

The initiative is funded by Arts Council England and is one of several projects being promoted by Hyndburn Council's Accrington Pals Centenary Commemoration Group.

Support has also been forthcoming from the Manchester Regiment Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne as well as Imperial War Museum North and The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

Visit

The composer recently visited East Lancashire Concert Band (the Accrington ‘Pals’ Band) during their regular Sunday morning rehearsal in Oswaldtwistle, under the direction of MD, Dale Grindrod, before signing up himself to start on the eagerly anticipated work.

It is hoped the completed composition will be performed as part of a special concert to be held at Accrington Town Hall on Saturday 27th September 2014.
