Newport Borough Band has paid tribute to their former Musical Director, Ivor Barnett who recently passed away.

Saddened

A spokesperson told 4BR: "We were deeply saddened to hear of Ivor Barnett’s death.

Ivor played a huge part in the history of the band, starting as Musical Director in 1985. During his first stint with Newport he took us from the Fourth to the Second Section and to represent Wales twice at the National Finals."

Return

They added: "Ivor stepped in at the last minute to conduct Newport band once again in 2010 and stayed until November 2012, and in December 2013 both he and his wife Christine returned to as playing members on baritone and soprano to make a huge difference to the band with their musicianship and experience.

Ivor and Chris were both looking forward to playing with the band at the area in Llandudno, but it was not to be."

Whether conducting or playing, Ivor was a truly dedicated bandsman and his passing has left a huge void in Newport BandNewport Band Spokesperson

Dedicated

They concluded: "Whether conducting or playing, Ivor was a truly dedicated bandsman and his passing has left a huge void in Newport Band.

We have not only lost a fine player but also a true friend and our condolences go to Christine and the family at this very sad time."
