Brass Bands England has released details for the forthcoming National Youth Championships, which will be held at the University of Salford in two weeks time.

With the RNCM in Manchester currently undergoing renovation work, the one day event moves to the well known university campus, where two halls will be utilised throughout the day.

Thirty-five compete

In releasing the details, BBE has acknowledged the support and co-operation of the competing bands who will be vying for honours across the four sections.

Shorter marathon day

The slight reduction in numbers this year should see everything completed by around 6.00pm.

The day will commence with the Championship Section in the Maxwell Hall at 9.00am, followed by the Intermediate Section which will start around 12.15pm.

Meanwhile, Peel Hall will play host to sixteen bands, starting with the Beginner's Section which commences at 9.20am.

After the results ceremony at around 12.30pm, the Junior Section will take centre stage.

Harper & Sparke

The bands in the Championship and Intermediate Sections will have to get to grips with the music of Philip Sparke and Philip Harper respectively.

The four Championship Bands will perform Sparke's 'Evolution: Five States of Change', whilst 'A Colwell Suite' will form part of the Intermediate challenger's programme.

Familiar judges

The panel of judges who will make the all important decisions during the day will be familiar to the contenders.

The Association of Brass Band Adjudicators Chairman, Alan Morrison will oversee the Championship Section with Richard Marshall, whilst Brett Baker and Katrina Marzella will get the chance to see what the Junior Section has to offer.

Keeping their eagle eyes on the players of the future in the Beginners Section will be Richard Evans and Michael Dodd.

In the Maxwell Hall, Steve Pritchard-Jones and Mareika Gray will deliberate over the Intermediate Section contenders.

Delight

On behalf of BBE, Arnold Tattersfield told 4BR: "We are delighted at the number of bands who will be attending this year, especially with the Championships falling during the Easter Holidays.

We also look forward to welcoming a number of bands who will be making their first contest appearance.
