Double trophies inspire Yorkshire youth

The iconic British Open Shield and National Championship Cup certainly retain their power to inspire — especially Yorkshire youth....

Members of the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band recently tasted their own little bit of ‘Double’ glory on their latest weekend gathering at the Robert Wilkinson Primary School in Strensall, York.

The sound of clicking mobile phones signaled turbo charged teenage texting skills, as the youngsters had their pictures taken with the British Open and National Championship trophies, after MD Prof Nicholas Childs brought the iconic Shield and Cup to help inspire the next generation of potential top flight brass band performers.

Phone bills

And as Alison Childs, YYBB Administrator, commented to 4BR, the chance to actually see what brass band hard work and commitment can bring, worked a treat!

"There was such a buzz as all the young students started to arrive. Heaven knows what their phone bills will be like, but it was wonderful to see then so excited about having their pictures taken with the trophies — on their own, with friends, in sections and with Black Dyke players.”

Inspire

The Black Dyke MD also felt that it showed that it showed that there is no better way to inspire young players than by showing them what success can bring.

“It soon became one of our best rehearsal days ever. The players were on a high after having their pictures taken. I’m sure many of them will one day go on and win them themselves with top bands.”

Pieces

The band enjoyed preparing Jonathan Bates’ ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, James Curnow’s ‘Jubilation’, Alan Fernie’s ‘Prismatic Light’ and Goff Richards’ classic, ‘Doyen’.

The Yorkshire Youth Brass Band courses cater for players aged 11-21 playing to a Grade 5 standard, and are tutored by Black Dyke stars Richard Marshall, John O’Brien, Gary Curtin, Adrian Hirst, Ben Richeton, Jonny Bates, Zoe Hancock, Dave Smith, Vicki Kennedy, Matthew Routley, Adie Smith, Matt Rigg and Alex Smith.

Thanks

Alison Childs added: “We would like to thank Besson Musical Instruments for their support in making this event possible.”
