Scottish champion unwrap classics on radio

Co-operative Funeralcare Band will be helping to bring brass band classics to a new audience in Scotland.

Funeralcare Band

Co-operative Funeralcare Band is preparing to hit the airwaves this weekend (Sunday, June 12th) for a broadcast performance on BBC Radio Scotland.

The Scottish Champion will feature on the programme 'Classics Unwrapped', as part of a feature on the range and beauty of brass instruments.

Significant mark

Conducted by Nigel Boddice MBE, the broadcast was initiated by contact between the BBC and the Scottish Brass Band Association, with Band Chairman Chris Davies telling 4BR that marks another sign that brass banding is once again making a significant cultural mark in Scotland.

"This is an important broadcast at a time when Scottish brass banding is projecting a rejuvenated image to the cultural life of the nation.

The band has been steadily working to involve itself in high-profile musical events that connect to a wider audience — and this is the latest example of that alongside our concert with jazz maestro James Morrison in November."

Wonderful opportunity

He added: "It's a wonderful opportunity to give a platform to some great repertoire — Gilbert Vinter's 'Spectrum' as a salute to tradition, to Dan Price's 'Sunrise over Blue Ridge' as a nod to a more modern style, and an arrangement of Dave Brubeck's 'Rondo a la Turk' to showcase brass banding versatility.

It's also been terrific to work with Nigel Boddice on this. He's done some great work to bring the best out of the band, and our relationship with him continues to be a fruitful one."
