The death has been announced of Ken Hirst

4BR has been informed of the death of Ken Hirst — the former secretary of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Mr Grimethorpe

A Band spokesperson told 4BR: "Everyone associated with Grimethorpe Colliery Band has been saddened to learn of the death of our former highly respected secretary. Ken was 'Mr Grimethorpe' for the way in which he worked tirelessly for the band for over 40 years."

One of the defining moments of his association came when the colliery was earmarked for closure in 1992.

His work and dedication went a great deal of the way to safeguarding the future of the band — as was his involvement in working with the producers of the film 'Brassed Off!' He was also an active member of the executive of the British Federation of Brass Bands.

Dedicated

Former principal cornet player Alan Morrison told 4BR: "This is very sad news. Ken was never a player but was just as important as any of them. He lived next door to the great George Thompson, so something must have rubbed off on him. He was completely dedicated to the band — a man of few words, but those he said you listened to."

The Band spokesperson added: "Grimethorpe Colliery Band feels blessed to have had Ken at the helm and fortunate to have had such a long association with him. The band will never forget him or his contribution.

He made an indelible mark on the band's history, and we wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Maureen and son David."

He was completely dedicated to the band — a man of few words, but those he said you listened toAlan Morrison

Funeral

4BR understands that the funeral will take place on Thursday the 8th of June at Ardsley Crematorium at 2.50pm, followed by a reception at Burntwood Court Hotel.
