Bands are reminded that the closing date for one of the most lucrative brass band contests in the UK calendar is fast approaching.

The Dr Martin Trust Wainstones Cup Contest will take place on 10th September at the Princess Alexander Auditorium, Yarm School, Stockton on Tees (above), with a prize fund of £8,000 up for grabs.

Hefty first prize

Bands have to perform an own choice test-piece, a march and a featured solo item in their programme sets, with the winners going home with a hefty £4,000 first prize.

The event first took place in 2010 and has since built up a loyal following of support, with a number of British Open bands competing at Symphony Hall the previous day now looking to finish off their weekend with a trip to the contest to further boost their coffers.

2016 winners Co-operative Funeralcare was one, taking the title in fine style last year.
