Tabby Kerwin's book is aimed at helping people who just happen to play in brass bands, with their mental wellbeing

Ahead of the re-launch of the Mode for... Publishing website next month, which will be the on-line home to much of the music by Simon Kerwin, Mode for… boss Tabby Kerwin has announced her new book due for publication in Spring.

The 3 Ps

Entitled 'The Three Ps' its based on Tabby's own strategy of using possibility, productivity and performance to balance happiness and mental wellbeing with everything life throws at us in everyday personal, professional, performing and business lives.

Tabby told 4BR: "Whilst on the face of it, this may not be seen to be a book relevant to the brass band movement, but it really is.

Mental health and wellbeing is finally being treated as less of a taboo subject and talked about, and I know from first-hand experience it affects so many people in brass bands."

Mental wellbeing

Tabby added: "Just take from dealing with nerves and performance anxiety to comparison syndrome, pressures of managing a band whilst juggling home and work life, to being in a close-knit and pressurised environment of being around people whilst trying to hide your own personal issues.

I've spoken to so many people in bands who have found it easier to give up their love of music because of the pressures they face on their own mental wellbeing.

I was one of them. That's why this book, and the experiences and advice I share, is as relevant to people in bands as it is to those I work with in business."

Focus

She added: "I believe that a focus on mental wellbeing in brass bands could help retain, encourage and support more players. A conversation definitely needs to be had about supporting members of bands and I hope that being honest and open about the subject could help musicians within the brass band genre.

If, by reading about my experiences and thoughts, it helps just one person, then the book will be well worth it, but I also hope just addressing the topic will start a wider conversation about the mental wellbeing of musicians in brass bands."
