Tullis centenary to reflect on past, present and future

The centenary musical celebrations of the Tullis Russell Band will take inspiration from its past, present and future.

Ray Munday and John Wallace will led the musical direction of the band in their centenary year

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the Tullis Russell Band and in addition to reflecting upon the last century with a busy series of celebratory concerts, premieres and a CD release, the organisation, which now supports four levels of brass banding is also looking to the future.

The Fife based organisation has recently welcomed the experienced Ray Munday as their new Resident MD, whilst the internationally acclaimed trumpeter John Wallace has accepted the role of Conductor Emeritus.

In addition the critically acclaimed Dutch composer Geert Jan Kroon has also been appointed 'Composer in Residence' for the centenary year.

Eclectic mix

2019 will see the band celebrate with an eclectic mix of music-making performed at a number of special concerts, including a 'Superband Grand Reunion Concert' on 16th November at the Fringe of Gold Festival, St Andrews.

That will be led by Lanarkshire-born composer Peter Graham alongside former Tullis alumni James Gourlay and will feature a new work by Peter celebrating the occasion in memory of his uncle, Tommy Stewart, who was a stalwart member and euphonium player of the band for many years.

Other works to be performed throughout the year will come from the pens of the renowned composer Michael Nyman, as well as Geert Jan Kroon's 'Soaring the Skies' and a world premiere of his 'One Night, One Tale' — a horn solo which will feature the band's 17 year old Samuel Duzinkewycz.

Booklet

Tullis is also producing a special commemorative 'Centenary Booklet' which tracks its history from Sir David Russell's visionary founding of the original works band in 1919 through to the modern day, whilst preparations are underway for a new CD recording which compiles a collection of works which have marked significant steps in the band's history.
