The bi-annual German National Championships takes place in Bad Kissingen

It has been announced that the bi-annual German National Championships (DBBM) will take place at the Prinzregentenbau in Bad Kissingen between the 22nd and 24th May 2020.

It will be the eighth time the event will be held, hosted by the German Brass Band Association (DBBV), which was founded in 2016.

There will be five different sections of senior competition as well as a separate youth division with the test-pieces chosen to challenge as well as develop the competitors.

Alexander Richter, Chairman of the Music Commission of the DBBV, told 4BR: "In order to promote the German brass band movement with a wider international ambition as well as linking to the very best traditions of banding heritage, it has been decided to use works that add tonality as well as technique."

Test pieces:

Champions Division: Concertino for Brass Band (Kenneth Downie)
First Division: The Saga of Haakon the Good (Philip Sparke)
Second Division: Rhapsodic Variations — My Strength, My Tower (Dean Goffin/Bowen)
Third Division: Suite for Brass (John Rutter/Smith)
Fourth Division: The Shipbuilders Suite for Brass Band (Peter Yorke)
Youth Division: Night before Battle (Dean Jones)

Sponsor support

Arnd Bolten, Chairman of the DBBV, told 4BR that he hoped for a well-supported participation of German bands, and was particularly delighted that the event has gained sponsorship from leading instrument manufacturers, Geneva Group.

"In Geneva Instruments we have a strong, internationally recognised main sponsor for the championships.

The Gala Concert promises to be a real highlight, but also the instrument exhibition and the youth championships deserve a special mention."
