Newhall looks forward to exciting 2020

The Newhall Band has come through a difficult period to emerge with renewed confidence for the year ahead.

Kevin presented a number of annual awards — including one to Hayley Burton

The Midlands based Newhall Band recently held its annual awards evening following a busy and highly successful Christmas period.

Musical Director Kevin Holdgate told 4BR: "For a number of reasons we haven't held an awards evening for a number of years. The band has just gone through a difficult period and it was felt that everyone would benefit from a good night out — and that was certainly the case."

Awards

Awards were presented by Kevin to 'Bandsman of the Year' and 'Players' Player of the Year', Adam Hawkins; 'Most Improved Player', Hayley Burton; 'Section of the Year' — tenor horns, and 'MD Special Award' winner, Calvin Hayton.

New signings

Kevin also revealed a number of new signings, with Noah Noutch, David Cousins and John Hart forming a brand new trombone section.

He added: "Noah is a newcomer to banding but possesses a plethora of experience in the jazz world, with David also about to enjoy his first taste of banding after many years experience in wind bands and local orchestras.

John will need no introduction to many people as he was the bass trombone with the successful Swinton Band under Prof David King when he studied at Salford University.

He's since played for the Memphis Belle Orchestra, Syd Lawrence, Andy Prior and The Northern Dance Orchestra amongst many others."

The band has also welcomed back Louise Parker and Sally Julian on Eb tuba, whilst Cjhris Wood comes in on baritone, Richard Stamp on flugel, and his partner Becky Yates on cornet. The experienced Jon Wright takes on the principal cornet role where he is joined by Lucy Clipsom.

Attendance at rehearsals since we came back after the Christmas break has been fantastic, and there is a real vibe back in the bandroomMD, Kevin Holdgate

Proud

Kevin added: "Losing so many players in such a short space of time would have flattened most bands, but I'm proud of the way the band has reacted to the challenge and rallied round.

Attendance at rehearsals since we came back after the Christmas break has been fantastic, and there is a real vibe back in the bandroom."
