Death of Davie Bennison

The death has been reported of one of Scottish banding's most popular figures.

Lochgelly
Davie Bennison was described as "the ultimate bandsman".

4BR has been informed of the death of Lochgelly Band stalwart Davie Bennison, who has died at the age of 89.

Davie first joined the band in 1946, first on horn but then on baritone which he played for the rest of his life. He only hung up his contesting uniform in 2018 but continued to play at every opportunity, helping at galas and carolling events until 2020.

Highlights

His favourite highlights were between winning the Scottish Championship in 1973 under Enoch Jackson or the Mineworkers Championship in 1976 under George Thompson.

A true bandsman, he filled in on just about every seat of the band, including percussion, and was an integral part of the band setting up its community band to pass on his knowledge.

Warm, funny, welcoming and supportive, his knowledge and experience benefitted countless players and people with he banding. Hugely popular in the Scottish banding community, he was also a man who enjoyed funny stories — told by him or about him.

He will be missed hugely by everyone in the band, and the many bands who have players in them that were privileged to know himLochgelly Band

Ultimate bandsman

A band spokesperson told 4BR: "Davie was the ultimate bandsman, friend and mentor to many. He will be missed hugely by everyone in the band, and the many bands who have players in them that were privileged to know him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Davie's family and friends. Rest in Peace our dear friend and colleague."
