Banding classics added to Wobplay

A great trio of classic banding releases, a new podcast episode and the chance to look back at this year's Elgar International Festival.

Wobplay
New releases are being added to the Wobplay multi-media platform

There are new additions to enjoy with Wobplay muti-media platform — with some classic recordings, podcasts and a look back at some great concert performances to enjoy.

Two great old releases can be enjoyed thanks to the addition of recordings from the incredible catalogue of Polyphonic Records that are now being added.

A Touch More Spice

'A Touch More Spice' sees the William Davis Construction Group Band under Dr Keith Wilkinson.

Recorded in 1989, the year they won the Midlands Regional Championships and claimed a top-six finish at the Royal Albert Hall they provide a classy selection box of easy listening items.

These include the MDs own excellent arrangements of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue', 'Bring Him Home' from 'Les Miserables' and 'Overture to Phantom of the Opera', whilst there are also classy arrangements from Jack Peberby, Bill Geldard and Philip Sparke.

National Brass Band Festival

In a nice twist of coincidence given that he is soon to celebrate his 75th birthday, Philip Sparke provides the arrangement of 'Flourish for a Birthday' to open the recording from the 1987 National Brass Band Festival.

However, on this occasion it didn't actually mark a special occasion as the original was written by Malcolm Arnold to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the London Philharmonic Orchestra which was founded in 1932.

Elsewhere though there is plenty of enjoyable playing on show from the massed bands of Desford Colliery, BBS Foden's and Brighouse & Rastrick conducted by Howard Snell, as well as Desford's National Championship winning performance of 'Harmony Music' and the late Rod Franks on the Arutyunyan 'Trumpet Concerto'.

Music of the Spheres

With the British Open Championship just around the corner, you can also enjoy a 2004 recording of 'Music of the Spheres' by Yorkshire Building Society Band — recorded soon after they claimed the European Championship title in Glasgow in giving its world premiere contest performance.

Alongside it there are fine recordings of 'Contest Music', 'Tristan Encounters' and 'Harrison's Dream'.
